Gala Concert, Swimming Programme, Sport and Upcoming Events
Congratulations to all Junior School boys who participated in the Gala Concert last Thursday. With a lot of hard work and encouragement from their music teachers, Mrs Kemp and Mr Ellis and tutors, the Grade 5 and Grade 6 bands performed their show case pieces to an appreciative audience. The choir, under the direction of Mrs Kemp gave an enthusiastic performance and it was very pleasing to see a cross section of Grade 3 - 6 boys participate in the choir.
Ms Stary put together a slide show to reflect the work the students have been doing in art. Boys from Grade 3 – 6 have worked with a variety of materials in the art room to produce paintings, drawings and collages of images such as seahorses, octopus, guitars, seascapes and landscapes.
Thank you to all the boys and parents for committing to this evening and thank you to the music and art staff for preparing the students and showcasing their talents. It was very enjoyable and successful evening.
Grade 6s and 3s have their last couple of days at Oceana for their Water Awareness Programme. Next week the Grade 4s and 5s will commence their 2 week programme (November 11 – 22). A parent paperwork note detailing all the requirements went out in late October and Grade 4 and 5 parents should have received a reminder note late this week.
Term 4 sport is well underway for the St Virgil’s Junior School boys. We have two teams registered in Indoor Cricket, which is played every Monday afternoon at the Kingston High Performance Centre. So far, these boys have displayed great skill and team work to compete against sound opposition from Hutchins, Dominic, Southern Christian School and Friends.
On Tuesday nights we have approximately 40 boys making up four Tee Ball teams playing on a variety of school grounds each week. These boys have played games against Fahan, Sacred Heart, Dominic and Collegiate. The enthusiasm these boys are playing with is infectious to those who come and support. This is such a great game where all boys have equal opportunity to bat, run and field.
Touch Football is a challenging game of fitness and skill. This term we have three St Virgil’s teams registered to play in the JSSATIS competition. These boys have matched it against Dominic, Sacred Heart, Collegiate and Hutchins. It is great to see most of these boys willing to learn new skills and a new game amongst their friends. Catch these boys in action each Wednesday afternoon at various school grounds from 4pm.
Making Jesus Real (MJR)
Both Grade 6 classes enjoyed a half day working with Mr Paul Crennan on MJR. They reflected on what they have enjoyed over their primary years at SVC. Paul challenged the boys about the legacy they will leave behind at the Junior School with the question, ‘If you were included in the SVC Hall of Fame how would you be described?’ This sparked some interesting discussion. The boys have gained supportive anecdotes and values from their work with MJR this year.
On Wednesday November 13 we will be having the sports photos. Boys are to wear sport uniform to school that day. Track top, track pants and the house shirt are not required in the photo. The photos will take place in the morning session.
Remembrance Day Service
This year we have decided to attend the Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph. This is an important opportunity for our boys to commemorate all Australians who have suffered and died in war fare and to acknowledge the significance of this day in continuing to work for peace in our world. We hope to meet up with the Light horsemen and nurses, whom we have had great interactions with over the last few years.
