Grade 6 Canberra Trip and Lots More!
Last week our Grade 6 students completed an education tour of the National capital. They had the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programmes with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $200 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate programme towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
This was a wonderful experience for all of the Grade 6 boys who embraced the opportunities at many national venues such as Parliament House, the Museum of Democracy at Old Parliament House, the Electoral Education Commission, the Arboretum, the Capital Exhibition Centre, Questacon, they Royal Australian Mint, the Australian Institute of Sport, the Zoo and Aquarium, the Australian War Memorial and the National Gallery. The boys enjoyed rooming with their mates in the Cabins at Alivio. We made the most of the play areas there on one night. The other nights we enjoyed a night tour of Questacon and a swim and slide at the Aquatic Centre. The boys enjoyed the hot breakfasts on offer and these set them up well for the extremely busy days.
I would like to congratulate the boys on their enthusiasm in participating in all activities; for displaying a good content knowledge and remembering a lot of information from the various tours and venues we visited. Thank you to the staff members who accompanied and supported the boys on the tour, Mrs Chambers, Ms Lack, Mrs Conallin, Mrs Tollard, Mr Ellis and Mr Scanlon.
Our heartfelt congratulations to Mr Peter Rasmussen, his wife Kirsten and their two boys, William and Thomas, on the safe arrival of a beautiful daughter and sister, Estelle Patricia.
OVA Memorial- Grade 10 Welcome Mass 1
The Junior School together with the graduating Grade 10 class and the Old Virgilians, celebrated Mass in the Cathedral on Tuesday. This was a great opportunity for the Junior Campus boys to farewell the Grade 10s, many of whom they would know, with brothers, friends and former Junior School boys among the cohort. It was refreshing to hear the boys singing with gusto, particularly during the St Virgil’s Anthem.
In the playground before the Mass, a great cricket game was had between the Year 10s and Grade 4s. The cheering rivalled any MCG crowd and the camaraderie between the boys was amazing to witness.
STCPSSA (Catholic) Athletics Carnival
On Friday November 22 St Virgil’s organised and hosted the Catholic Schools Athletics Carnival. Thank you to Mrs Kelly Dixon who spent a lot of time organising the carnival and was assisted on the day by Mr Moschogianis, Mr Terhell, Mrs Copeland, Mrs Read, Mrs Sutton and some senior school boys. The Junior School team performed extremely well. We won’t take any of Mrs Dixon’s good news away, so please read her full report in the Junior School Sport’s report. Congratulations to all boys for participating enthusiastically.
